MILTON - Angela Parker Barsalow, a college professor and director of religious education, died peacefully on Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, of ovarian cancer.
Born April 23, 1945 in New York City, she was the daughter of George A. and Rosemary Hearns Parker. Angela attended the schools of Saint Martin and Queen of the Rosary in Amityville, N.Y. She received her bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in theology from The College of New Rochelle in New York. Upon earning a master's degree in sociology from Adelphi University, she entered the world of academia as an assistant professor in its sociology department. She went on to teach courses at Fairfield University in Connecticut where she pioneered a curriculum in civil discourse.
Her teaching career led her to Poultney, where she chaired the department of sociology at Green Mountain College. Shortly after coming to Vermont, she met Charles Barsalow of Fair Haven. On Aug. 17, 1974, they were married at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Poultney and from there they established their home in Milton.
Angela felt it was important to be involved in community. Throughout her years in religious education at St. Ann Catholic Church and Christ the King School, she lovingly touched the lives of many families with her stories and songs. In an effort to make Milton a great place to live and raise a family, she founded the Milton Beautification Club and co-founded the Milton Paper weekly newspaper. She was also a director and president of the Milton chapter of the Needlework Guild. For many years, she served as secretary to the Milton Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Adjustment. She was elected as an alternate to the state Democratic Convention. Along with her husband, she was active in the Vermont Auctioneer's Association.
Angela resumed her pursuit of higher education at Saint Michael's College, Colchester, where she earned a certificate of advanced specialization in graduate theology and pastoral ministry and continued her studies.
Angela is survived by her husband, Charlie of Milton and their children, Mary Ellen of North Hero/Taylors, S.C.; Rosemary Hearns of Naples, Maine, Agnes of Montpelier, Charles of North Hero and Francis of Montpelier; her sister Rosemary and her husband, Col. Charles McCloskey of Raleigh, N.C.; her brothers, Dr. George Parker and his wife Sue of Richmond, Va., and Charles Parker and his wife Margaret of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; her mother-in-law, Charlotte Barsalow of Long Boat Key, Fla.; her brother-in-law, William Barsalow and his wife Jane of Fair Haven; her many nieces and nephews, Charles, Michael and Brendan McCloskey, Holly, Glenn and Scott Parker, Charles, Shannon and Katherine Parker, William Barsalow III, Michael and Todd Duval; and her "grand ones."
