In November of 2008, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. At my request, due to a
family history of Ovarian cancer, I had a pelvic ultrasound and laparoscopy done. The results were ovarian cancer stage 3B.
After the initial shock and tears, I had to tell my children, family, and friends. It was one of the hardest things I ever
had to do. I set forth with a new journey in my life that would be filled with positive thinking.
My next step was to find a doctor that I could trust and a Hospital that would provide excellent care for me. I was fortunate that my daughter Shelly lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. I decided that I wanted to go to Duke Morris Cancer Clinic. I met with Dr. Fidel Valea and his nurse Kristin Lavoie. I had surgery performed by Dr. Valea and 6 chemo treatments. I am now taking a clinical trial drug which consists of 22 treatments.
I was not on my journey alone. I had a lot of followers. First of all, I thank God, my children, and grandchildren, who are the sunshine of my life, family and friends for all of their support, prayers, gifts, phone call, cards and visits. A special Thanks to my Daughter Shelly, who was always there for me. She is my Rock. My son Tommy for all of his support and sense of humor. He could always make me laugh even when I sick.
I liked Dr. Valea immediately after I met him. He explained everything to me that I needed to know. He has been with me all of the way. He shows that he really cares and listens to me when I need to talk. I was also fortunate to get a great nurse with Kristin Lavoie. She is always patient with me and her kindness and support has always been appreciated.
On August 11, 2009, Dr. Valea gave Shelly and I the greatest news, I was in remission! That was the best news we could ever receive. I cried tears of joy and relief that night.
I know that the power of prayer and positive thinking was a major part in my recovery. I am feeling better each and every day. I know it will take some time, but I will soon be back to living a normal life again. I couldn't be happier to start my new journey.
My advice to other women is to never give up, keep your doctor appointments, listen to your own body and it's warning signs. You need to request test be done if you feel it's necessary. It helped save my life.
